Physical Education

Physical Education
Students at Marian College participate in Physical Education from 1st year through to 6th year. They are offered a broad range of activities which provide opportunities to build confidence and experience enjoyment while participating in Physical Activity. Marian College will offer Physical Education as a Leaving Cert subject from 2020.
The college has some of the best sports facilities of any secondary school in the country with a state of the art new sports hall and gym. Two basketball courts, an outdoor multi purpose pitch and a 20 meter swimming pool.
Added to these in house facilities the College makes use of the local sports amenities in Irishtown Stadium (Athletics Track), Clanna Gael (GAA) and Sandymount YMCA (Astro Turf Pitches). These extra facilities mean all students experience a varied curriculum.
Physical Education in junior cycle aims to build students’ motivation and commitment to physical activity within and beyond the school. In physical education students learn about a range of physical activities and build their skills and confidence to participate in them. They also learn about the importance of health enhancing and inclusive physical activity for everybody.
The aim of Leaving Certificate Physical Education is to develop the learner’s capacity to become an informed, skilled, self-directed and reflective performer in physical education and physical activity in senior cycle and in their future life.
In 2017/18 Marian College Transition Year PE students have also taken part in the Active School Flag (ASF) Program. During this program an enthusiastic group of Transition Year students have worked to improve physical activity levels among the school community. These students have undertaken research and implement several new strategies to encourage and promote physical activity. This has involved student led lunchtime and after school activities.
